What is The B.I.G. Forest?
The B.I.G. Forest is the Children’s Ministry of Dunwoody Community Church.
The B.I.G. Forest ministers directly to children, from birth to 5th graders, and to their families.
Our Mission, which reflects the mission of the entire church, is:
To nurture, teach, and encourage children through scripture, our example and relationships to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.
Why "The B.I.G. Forest"?
B.I.G. is an acronym for “Believer’s in God”. We believe nurturing children to grow is similar to the way God would nurture trees to grow… providing light (Jesus and God’s Word – John 8:12 & Psalm 119:105), water (love of teachers and assistants – Ezekiel 31:3-5), and air (safe, warm environment – Psalm 12:6-8). Each age group is named after either a phase of tree growth or a type of tree, depending on the age of the children.
Seedlings: 0-2 Years
Sprouts: 2-3 Years(By September 1st)
Dogwoods: 4-Young 5's
Georgia Pines: K-1st grade
Mighty Oaks: 2nd-3rd grade
Giant Redwoods: 4th=5th grade
What happens in The B.I.G. Forest?
All year round, during worship service
1st-5th graders |
1st-5th graders attend the first part of Worship Service with their parents. At approximately 11:00, after the music worship is completed, they are dismissed to “Children’s Church”, where they are taught by Maxann Wanamaker, Director of Children’s Church. Then, they break out into small groups with consistent leaders called “Shepherds” to follow through on the lesson being taught. The focus of the Shepherd role is to develop relationships with a group of children and use that relationship to teach them God’s truths and pray with them and for them. |
4-yr-olds through Kindergarten |
4-yr-olds through Kindergarten also attend Worship Service with their parents and are dismissed after the singing to classrooms for their own “Children’s Church”. This group is divided into two small classes – Kindergarten and 4-yr-olds/Young 5’s. The Kindergarten class is taught by 3 people who have many years of experience in teaching Sunday School - Lisa Anderson, Sherry Allen, and John Seckman. The 4-yr-old/Young 5’s class is taught by Elizabeth Shetler every week. Elizabeth was a teacher by profession until she gave it up to homeschool her own children. |
2-3 year olds |
2-3 year olds (by September 1st) do not go to Worship Service with their parents. They go into a class where they are taught by one teacher and two rotating helpers. Cinnamon Dizon, a homeschooling mother, teaches them to worship God through song and teaches them scripture memory. We believe that imprinting worshipful songs and scripture on their heart at this age will be something that never leaves them throughout their whole life. |
0-24 months |
0-24 months are cared for in the Nursery, every week, by Judy Davis, a professional nanny, and a small, consistent team of rotating assistants. Judy has been leading the care of children in The B.I.G. Forest nursery for 7 years. She knows all of the children and their parents and provides loving, consistent care for these little precious ones. |
September - June, before worship service, 9:30-10:15
